Cloud-Biometric Authentication Fortifies FIDO’s Multi-Device Credentials
With the increasing utilization of digital technologies, it is only necessary for organizations to step up and develop more secure systems and user iD verification to protect all of the important data in their possession. Consequently, the Fast Identity Online or FIDO Alliance and the three tech giants – Microsoft, Apple, and Google – announced their plans to expand their support for common passwordless login during World Password Day.
For the longest time, passwords have served as a verification mechanism for many organizations and applications. However, with the fast-growing numbers of companies switching from traditional transactions to digital, passwords have become more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Because of this, both enterprises and their users no longer feel secure with their accounts.
This is what the FIDO technology is after. The core of FIDO’s mission is to change the nature of authentication by replacing password-only logins with secure and fast passwordless sign-ins experiences across websites and applications.
FIDO has also announced that they have developed a process that can offer portability between devices. Through FIDO, users can log into online accounts using their biometrics (face recognition and fingerprints) and PIN codes across devices. And with the three tech giants building passwordless support into their respective platforms, users will be able to set up FIDO across multiple devices, as long as the original device is nearby.
The FIDO technology honestly sounds promising. However, it also has some vulnerabilities, given that it is focused on device-only authentication. Because of these verification solutions companies such as LoginID exert their best efforts to help organizations move away from device-only verification. Instead, it encourages the utilization of a more secure, cloud-based biometric authentication coupled with FIDO2 authentication.
